The Ledaig 42 will be on offer at the weekend’s Rocky Mountain Wine and Food Festival.

Nothing like warming up your weekend with some winter warmers.

Whether it’s wine, spirits or beer, there will be plenty on offer in the grand tasting hall at the Shaw Conference Centre this Friday and Saturday, for the 2015 edition of the Rocky Mountain Wine & Food Festival.

But with hundreds of options to choose from, how do you spend your tasting coupons wisely?

Here are my 5 picks to try this weekend.

1. Ledaig 42 Year Old (Pictured): OK, it may not be a wise use of tokens to some (and it will cost you a bunch, $60 for 1/4 oz. and $120 for 1/2 oz.), but it may be well worth it to others. This single malt scotch retails at $7,000 per bottle, and there were only 500 bottles produced, so this makes for a one-of-a-kind whisky experience. This is available in limited quantities, so first come, first served.

2. Fonesca Port: It’s coming up to the Christmas season, and for a lot of people, that means Port. Admittedly, I prefer to dip into the whisky around the holidays, but Fonesca  offers a fantastic range of bottle and wood aged ports. Their Bin 27 is delicious, as is many of their Tawny Ports.

3. Stone Brewing: If you like your beer big and bold, and you haven’t tried Stone Brewing, you’ll want to check them out. This southern California brewery has made a name for itself with in-your-face ales like Arrogant Bastard. They are renowned in the craft beer world and are worth giving your tastebuds a workout.

4. Canadian Club: If they’re pouring the CC 100% Rye, or any of their small batch whiskies, I would certainly recommend stopping. Despite the ridiculous TV ads for the 100% Rye, it is a fantastic Canadian whisky. Made the same place they make Alberta Premium, with a nice spiciness on the palate, but great depth of flavour and a lingering finish.

5. Eau Claire Parlour Gin: Alberta craft distillery Eau Claire, based in Turner Valley, has been generating buzz since they launched, largely on the strength of a farm-to-bottle approach, and this London-dry gin. Big juniper flavour is off-set by hints of rosehip, saskatoon berry, coriander, lemon, orange and mint.

So there you go. Five tasty liquid treats to enjoy at this weekend’s Rocky Mountain Wine & Food Festival.

Enjoy!
